Connect Stats

A garmin connect viewer app for iphone and ipad
SupportDocumentationActivitiesDetailsStatsCalendarTroubleshoot

DESCRIPTION

Connect Stats is an activity viewer for Garmin Connect. It lets you review your activities, search, analysis, plot and see basic statistics on all your data collected in garmin connect from your iphone. ipad support is basic and mostly inherited from the iphone for now. You can read some of the motivation behind the app here

FEATURES

- Detailled report on your activities, with laps break down, map gradient, graphs and statistics

- Use gradient color to visually see on the map your heart rate, speed, power or cadence

- Calendar view of your activities

- Activity search

- Monthly/Weekly summary statistics of your activities

- Monthly/Weekly/Detailled Historical report and graphs on any collected data

- Display scatter plots, trend lines for both historical and track data.

- Support multiple garmin connect account simultaneously with multiple profiles.

- Support most activity types, including support for lap swimming activities from GarminSwim or Forerunner 910

- Display the location name for your activities.

GOAL OF THE PROGRAM

- Goal is to provide convenient and full access to all our data from your mobile device.
- The app was tested with data from forerunner, garminswim, garmin edge, garmin fenix and garmin fit app.

- It's intended to handle large numbers of activities (tested with 2000 activities and with activities

up to 6h long). For such large archives the initial download can be a bit long, especially if you have an older phone.

- The app will not let you record any activities, but only display data uploaded from Garmin Connect.

FIRST USE

- when you start the program you will be prompted for your user name and password.

- the app will then start downloading activities from garmin connect.

- Note that this process can be quite slow if you have a lot of activities. For instance, 600 activities can take up to 3min on iphone 4, but much less than 1 minute on an iphone 5.

- You can interrupt the process at any time and it will restart where it left it when you restart the app and start refreshing.

- While it's downloading you should be able to look at already downloaded activities but the performance will be slower than after full download completed. If any error occur during that process restart the app and it should restart the download where it left of.

- If you have issue connecting check the trouble shooting section

HOW TO USE IT

- You can refresh by pulling down the activity list

- You can navigate the different tabs and touching most data will let you drill down on that number.

- You can touch a graph or the gear button to rotate through the different graphs options or bring in the graph full screen.

- You can reload an activity to update changes in garmin connect by pulling down on the detail tab

- You can see full history of any field by selecting the field name in the stats page

- You can drag to the right the detail view to reveal the sharing page for Google earth or facebook/tweater sharing

- You can export an activity to strava from the sharing page

- You can tap the name of an activity to rename it. This will rename it also on Garmin Connect.

- If an activity was deleted on garmin connect, select it in the app and pull down to refresh. It will then delete it from the app.

- If you setup the withings service in the settings page, you should see in the details page the closest weight to that date and in the stats an extra scatter plot versus your weight. Currently to refresh you'll have to go back to the settings page and press refresh. More graphs, auto refresh, etc will be added in later versions.

Crashing suddenly
Hi - I have laestt version on ipad mini, no updates recently. All has been working fine and suddenly crash on load app :(. Uninstalled, reinstalled numerous times and it crashes on import post login. Can't load app to send bug report... Any advice? Thanks
Brice replied on 2013-05-22 21:25:45
Similar to the other post below, not sure the issue, but if you could email me at briceguard DASH connectstats AT yahoo.com I can give you some instruction how to send me some data from the app that may help me debug.

Hmm... All remained ok on iPhone during this. Managed to make ipad mini work by repeatedly 'pausing' initial download by minimising app, which seems to have worked. :)

Calendar integration...
Hi, lovely app full of fantastic information of which I'm truly grateful for all of your efforts. I'm coming from Runmeter which was able to integrate the app calendar with ipad/iPhone calendar - can you tell me if this is something that we might see in future releases? Thanks very much.
Brice replied on 2013-05-22 21:25:05
How does the integration work? One thing I though I haven't been able to find the garmin api to access future training plan, so don't know if this can be integrated

Black screen!
Hi. After successfully synching with my Garmin data and using your program I then exited. Next time I accessed it all I got was a black screen for a few secs and then it closed. I have reinstalled and got the same thing (fine on initial synch and use, but then the black screen thereafter). Any ideas?

Heart rate zone view
I like an old polar app feature of being able to view a day, week, month or year summary of time in heart rate zones. This way I can get an overall picture of my training intensity for the past exercise, day, week, month, year, etc Great app !! Thanks Scot
Brice replied on 2013-04-14 13:11:58
sounds like a good idea I will put it on the list of feature to add

Great app! Can you explain the "development" stat?
Brice replied on 2013-05-13 20:53:35
development is the number of meters travelled for one tour of pedal.

Withings
Same problem as below...App connected to Withings account. Set up is successful. Refresh shows I have 622 measures but I can't find the measures within the app.
Brice replied on 2013-05-09 06:45:03
the main use should be in the detail view of an activity it will display the weight on that day and in the stats history view you should be able to see scatter plot with weight in x axis. so for example how your speed is overtime as a function of weight

I'm very content with your app. Still I have a question. Is it possible to change the x-field from hours into km's?

Feature request
How about adding splits? Wouldn't you like to see if you had a negative split on the second half of a long run? How about the ability to show a 5k time midpoint starting at the 2nd or 3rd kilometer of a 10k run?
Brice replied on 2013-04-19 06:45:56
I am actually working on something similar: the ability to compute new laps. I have implemented for example distance base lap or time base lap. Adding a split one is a great idea and would fit well. It's not completely ready yet because I have a bit of an issue to get it right because I will need to do some kind of interpolation as the GPS point usually don't hit the target rule if you see what I mean. but I am getting close, hopefully next release.
Brice replied on 2013-04-19 06:48:44
don't know if you have noticed but there is a "undocumented" feature in the lap using the basis for the above in the map view if you toggle the lap view it will also show you your fastest km or mile. this is based on the same logic for calculated lap... but i have a much more complete version coming as I just described
RobNewsham replied on 2013-04-28 20:47:31
I think the half split would be a great idea.

This is weird. Your ipad mini is using ios 6? Only issue I am aware is that it crashes on start up on ios 5. which version of the app are you using? 1.9? Maybe try uninstall/reinstall.

Calendar Functionality
Hi Brice, great app. Just wondering if would be possible for the calendar to display scheduled workouts. I use workouts and training plans a lot, but it's impossible to access the Garmin Connect calendar from an Iphone, meaning I have to log in via a computer to view upcoming workouts. There is a very basic view on my Garmin 910, but it's not very usefull (or with me all the time). Cheers, Matt

Strava up load
Hi, Great app, thanks. I am trying to upload an activity to Strava, but it doesn't want to work. I have taken a look at the troubleshooting and follow the work around, but still no joy. When I tap on the share behind the activity, the app logs on to Strava and downloads. But when I go to Strava the activity is not there! Am I doing something wrong? You mentioned a fix in the next revision, when is that due? This is a great feature and will mean I don't have to switch on the computer. Please help! Thanks Martin
Brice replied on 2013-03-19 23:04:50
I noticed for me sometimes the activity takes some time to appear on strava. but usually just a few refresh before it appears. if you don't see still don't see it can you send me a bug report from the app with maybe a way to contact you and I will see if I find something in your logs

Connexion...
Cordialement
Brice replied on 2013-03-17 16:37:55

Yes, if you connect to the web site or if the app is paused for a while the cookie establishing the connection may expire. If that's the case, trying to refresh should attempt a re-login and to get a new cookie.

Q about Elevation Gain
A question about the "elevation gain" map... For example, for a recent short ride, I see the Elevation Gain (ft) ranging from 157.0 (light blue) to 172.6 (dark red), but the map only shows a single color- not the darkest red, but near it. Can you explain what you are graphing here?
Brice replied on 2013-03-14 21:16:43
This is supposed to be the elevation/altitude. But you should have the different colors as per the legend. If you have a single color it sounds like a bug. Did you set the app unit in the settings page?

yes. try uninstalling/reinstalling the app. there is an unexplained issue that affect quite a few people on first setup. I can't reproduce it and still a majority of people are fine. I now suspect some bad caching policy which I will try to tightened in a next version. uninstalling/reinstalling should clear all caches

I don't use training peak, I will look for it see if they have a way to upload. for strava, I feel very silly that but made it to the release. I submitted a fix but takes a week to make it to the store. you can meanwhile still use strava upload by doing it from the sharing page where the login screen here doesn't have the bug

Nice app so far!
Just downloaded this app v1.7 and it works pretty well :) Couple of suggestions - a) In the Yearly summated totals which shows the graph with coloured lines, maybe add a coloured tab next to the year so you can see what line relates to what year. b) The button to select yearly, monthly etc as a std drop down selector instead of having to scroll through the options. Neater and keeps the button the same size vs it changing all the time. c) When showing month by calendar button, having a better way to select a different month vs scrolling with the arrows. Perhaps hitting the month label brings down a scrolling month selection drop down. Small bugs for me - In that same month looking mode the labels button scrolls through speed/activites/time but doesn't show time or distance in the area next to the label selector. If you add a previous unsynced older activity through the website (as has to happen sometimes when the Garmin wont turn on but you still do it) these will fail to sync probably due to the age and not being marked as unsynced correctly. Deleting app and reinstalling forces a cache refresh and they appear fine. Looks like this issue is mentioned below previously
Brice replied on 2013-02-17 07:36:44
thanks. A few answers: a) if you press the graph, it will show it full screen with a legend telling you which color is which year. b) I will look how to do that. I personally like the scroll through option though. c) One way is to select an activity from the list view, potentially with the search, after you did that the month of that selected activity will be shown next time you go to calendar view.
Brice replied on 2013-02-17 07:38:59
For the bugs, 1) unsync'd old activity. I should add an option to do a full resync. 2) the sync issue I fixed for next release (1.8) is related to deleted activities. But it's the same currently the app won't go too far in history by default because it's quite slow to query everything. BUt i'll make sure the full resync also processes deleted activities.

Date logic
Hi, The monthly totals for some month don't match garminconnect.com totals. I think it has to do with the first or last day of the month getting allocated to the wrong month (leap year related?). Nice app anyway. Thanks, Klaus
Brice replied on 2013-01-27 17:39:23
Hum. Yes, possible, I will take a look. Are you in Europe (GMT timezone) or US/Asia? I think it could be also an issue with some activity passed midnight GMT (or before in asia) allocated to the wrong month/day. Let me see if I can look at that, but these dates arithmetic can be a bit tricky.
Klaus S replied on 2013-01-27 17:51:28
I'm in the US EST. My workouts are usually in the morning, so adding 5 hours for GMT should not cross over into another month.

Try a workout on Jan 31, 2012. This may be a date that got misallocated.

Activities overview
In the Activities overview I can see my heart rate in "percentage" but it is listed as "bpm" - can this be fixed? The same is the issue under Details.
Brice replied on 2013-01-29 19:20:05
Yes, I think it can be fixed, I am hoping to include a fix in a next release

parsing hangs
I deleted several duplicate activities from Garmin Connect. Now your app won't update, giving a "parsing failed" message. How do I fix this? If one can't make corrections in Garmin Connect and have them transferred to ConnectStats, it's useless.
Brice replied on 2013-01-22 18:39:41
I will try that workflow and see if I can replicate. Will it update newer activities and just failed on one or it also doesn't update newer one? In the next version (coming soon) I have built in a bug report with some diagnostic so I have better chance to fix.
Brice replied on 2013-01-22 23:02:11
I have been unable to reproduce the parsing failure after deleting activities from garmin connect. I have added in the bug report to come out next week the option to send the file that wasn't parsed, so if you choose so you will then be able to send it so i can debug your problem.

This is not a miss but a bug. it doesn't refresh from the garmin site once downloaded. It will be fixed in the next version

Graphing
Hi Brice, great app! I wonder if it's possible to work more on the averages for the info, because there seems to be a wide 'scatter' on the graphs that I don't see in real life while I'm actually running. For instance as my pace increases, my heart rate rises in close correlation. However the graph for each run shows only a loose correlation. I think this may come from the Garmin's very erratic pace calculation based on the GPS fluctuations, and if you were to average this pace more for the graphs, I think you might display a much 'realer' correlation in the data sets..?.
Paul replied on 2013-01-02 15:16:30
As an example, if you check my Jan 1 run 256550670, you'll see I ran at a very constant 150 bmp hr, and I also ran a very constant pace. However, the GPS leads to Garmin showing a very erratic pace, which is always Garmin's weakness. If you are able to recover the true pace average from this data, and then match to the HR, maybe you'll be able to find display that much clearer correlation. You'll also hugely improve on the data that Garmin themselvs display on the connect website.
Brice replied on 2013-01-02 17:08:37
That's a good idea. I'll try to add moving average to the scatter plot too. I already added it to the gradient map overlay in last version which resulted in better info I think.
Paul replied on 2013-01-04 14:34:46
Another thing that occured to me is that since you do stride count, you could easily add stride length, another thing missing from Garmin that would acutally be really useful. I often try and work out if my stride length is improving over time.
Brice replied on 2013-01-04 14:39:02
another very good idea. will also try to add that.
Paul replied on 2013-01-10 15:30:21
Another thing that occurs is that if I'm running a constant pace & HR during a run, I won't get a particularly good graph. But over a few runs at different paces and HR's then there are some more interesting graphs to be had, and also to compare one month with another a few months later to see improvement. More work I know, but maybe something for the future? Loving the app! Thanks :)
Brice replied on 2013-01-12 14:20:33
I am a bit unclear which specific graph you have in mind. A different version of the scatter graph? Or a scatter graph of multiple activities to compare? One thing I am playing with is some kind of cluster analysis, but haven't yet figured out something that is useful in showing progress/regimes. Very interested to discuss in more details what you have in mind
Paul replied on 2013-01-17 15:07:28
I mean graphing over time to collate data from several runs. As an example, if I run 4 times a week at different set paces, each graph will be fairly uneventful. However if you combine all 4 data sets (and smooth the erratic gps fluctuating pace), you'll get a great graph which accurately shows my HR at different paces. From here you could compare week 1 with ie week 6 to show an improvement. Or do the same with monthly data etc.
Paul replied on 2013-01-17 15:18:50
I also seem to always get a graphing average line which shows a slightly inverse relation for pace to HR, so as my pace is faster, my HR is lower (which I would love! But it's obviously not the case). I can mail you a screenshot if this helps?

I see, so basically a scatter plot of multiple activities, let me play with the idea see how it look. For your inverted relationship, yes maybe mail me a screenshot that would be great. My email is briceguard DASH connectstats AT yahoo.com. Most of my own graph are in the right direction.

Suggestion
Hi, first of of all congratulations for an excellent application. I would like to make a suggestion: as we exercise, in my particular case running, although I do some cross training (mountain biking), i want to know how my fitness condition is improving. A very effective way to get a fast glimpse at ones fitness condition is calculate, what I call "fitness ratio", it consists in dividing the avg pace (km/h) by the avg HR and multiplying by 100. This very simple but effective ratio will show how one fitness condition is improving or even can tell when one is overreaching. For a well trained person it will show values above 8%. The idea is to run faster with less BPM. Is also a good way to compare different activities, at different pace and different HR. This could also be plotted in a distribution graph. It would great if you could add this feature. Best regards, Mario Pires
Brice replied on 2013-01-13 12:00:57
This sounds like a good idea too, i'll add it to the list of calculated fields to add. What do you think of the scatter plots though? If you plot the avg HR vs Avg Pace, it gives you a good idea of how you have evolved over time. The color will be from older to more recent so you see if you moved from slow/high HR to fast/low HR area.
Mario Pires replied on 2013-01-14 11:20:25
Hi Brice, That is a good idea, if we could see for a specific period the scatter plots would give a ver good idea of progression. If im not mistaken currently the app can only plot a single training session correct?
Brice replied on 2013-01-14 12:12:14
it actually has historical scatter graph. in the stats section, when you select all you can touch any fields to show the scatter graph and historical plots. then touch the scatter plot and you will have a little gear to change the x absciss. I need to write some documentation, sorry didn't get time yet
Brice replied on 2013-01-14 12:13:21
in the scatter plot the older will be lighter color and blue all the way to red for the more recent one so you can visually see the progression
Mario Pires replied on 2013-01-14 14:17:51
Sorry Brice for the question repetion of my last comment. I can see the historical stats, it gives a very good idea of progression. If one could tailor choose the period than it would be great. Thank you for your comments.
Brice replied on 2013-01-14 20:49:58
Yes, I don't know why the question get repeated, I think there is a bug in the web site but can't figure it out... I'll see to let user choose the date range.

Stats
Hello Brice, Nice app, but in the stats section, it will always go back to cycling without me prompting the app to, without having the time to have a look at my runnin'/swimming stats ; any idea?
Brice replied on 2013-01-12 22:01:51
Does it do that only at the beginning after starting the app or it persists? Sometimes at the beginning it still downloads missing info in the background and which triggers a reinit of the UI (a mistake i am trying to fix for future reason). So if it's the problem you are seeing usually it only last for the first 30sec of using the app. Is it your case?
Cyril replied on 2013-01-13 06:44:54
That is correct, after being a while in the app, it will stops switch ont back to cycling ... Not sure how long though ... A "nice to have" would be a percentage split between swim/bike/run, i think you mentionned working on the stats, so just sayin' :) Thanks for your quick answer, an this cool app!

Avg pace colour line flashing.
When viewing activities routes on my ipad the colour coded route flashes and constantly redraws. When it first opens it is okay, but change the pace to Hr or elevation and it starts happening? Otherwise loving your work.
Brice replied on 2013-01-08 02:57:10
Yes, I think it has to do with the fact the app is still updating/downloading on the background, and currently after an update it redraws everything even the activities not affected, i'll try to think of something to avoid the flashing.

Modified activities
If you update an activity on Garmin connect after synchronization, either the information is not updated (if you change the date of a training for example) or the update in connectstats is not consistent (if you change the activity name for example). Otherwise, the application is very good, I would have like to see a yearly summary.

App Can't Login
Hi. My username and password on Garmin Connect do not appear to be accepted. I'm 100% sure they are correct as I can log into connect on my iPad using the same details. Any assistance would be greatfully received.
Brice replied on 2013-01-04 13:00:04
I suspect there maybe a special character in your password or username the app does not process right. I tried to test that but didn't check all possible characters. I have seen other report of the problem and would be keen on solving it. you can either let me know a special character that you use or try to change your password to not have special characters (£&^% etc)
Steve replied on 2013-01-04 18:07:06
Replacing the offending character has done the trick. Many thanks for the quick response and the great app.

Calendar Update
Got to say - love the app! Wish Garmin could have done something like this, thank god for entrepreneurship. My comment - I love the calendar overview page however it looks like it will only display distances in (KM), not (MI). Could you change or add this feature in a future update? Don't imagine it would be that hard and most people I would think would like the option of displaying either. Thanks again!!!

Yes, I am working on a global override for the unit system so you can change it from the settings page. It won't be in version 1.3 (already submitted) but hopefully in a following one

After I start the app, it displays a light blue screen with two icons, but doesn't prompt for login/pswd. Then after about 10-15 seconds, the app exits. I do not see a menu or tab. I've tried to tap on the screen in several spots, but no action is performed. I have an ipad.
Brice replied on 2012-12-26 05:45:11
are you using iOS 6? the app only runs on iOS 6, on older system it would probably crash on startup. I will check if I can capture that problem on startup so it displays a measage
Doug Lindner replied on 2012-12-26 14:35:03
I'm using 5.1.1. I can't run 6.0 on my ipad. Not sure why this app requires ios 6, but i guess that's your decision. If there is no hope of running it on my system, i'll uninstall. Thanks for the fast response!
Brice replied on 2012-12-26 15:11:54
To be honest, it wasn't really a conscious decision. I am not really an iphone app expert, more a hobbyist. I'll have a look if it's easy to make it for 5.1, meanwhile uninstalling is probably the right thing to do, because even if i manage to make it work on 5.1, it will require an update.
Brice replied on 2012-12-26 15:24:34
Oh. Actually just did a quick research. The problem is the feature I used for formatting all the text is new to iOS6, so would be large work to make it work for iOS5. Quite sorry about that, but I probably won't make it work in the short term.

Hi Great APP, update fine when i upload files from my edge 800 and my FR910XT but fit files from my fenix don't come across properly speed graph under map is blank and no Avg pace graph or speed is created just a blank page, device type not always listed no symbol for hiking, i can email screen shots if you like just let me know where to send them best regards mark
Brice replied on 2012-12-27 06:29:23
Hi. Yes, I need to add hiking symbol ( as well as skiing, given it's the season and I am at it now...) For the fenix rides, it's likely the data coming from garmin connect is not in the same format or something chokes the parser. I don't have access to a fenix activity to check. If you have one you are willing to share, you can send me by email the url of the activity in garmin connect, i should be able to test it. To find the url, go to garmin connect, select the details view for the activity that doesn't display (something like http://connect.garmin.com/activity/XXXXXXXXX). Though if you do that it means I will have full access to that activity data, so make sure you are comfortable with that. I won't do anything with it except than access it to test the software. Also I won't be able to access any other activities from you that the one for which you would give me the url. The email would be: briceguard DASH connectstats AT yahoo.com
